4) Writing About Redeployment [Categories: Life Choice, Course Reading, Re-Genre]: Please complete the following
Introduction :
The narrator returns from the military. He not only has to adjust to society but also has to deal with finding out that his dog is sick . throughout the story the narrator has flashbacks from the military , where he had to kill dogs by the end of the story the narrator has to make the decision to either take his dog to the vet or kill him hisself and he ultimately makes the decision to kill his dog himself . Re-Genre : I picked up the body and put it in my trunk. I couldn’t just leave Vicar laying there. I figured I would burry him in the back yard. As I drove home all I could think of were the memories Vicar and I shared. I was going to miss him laying in my lap as I fed him foods that he shouldn’t even be eating in the first place. The ride seemed longer than it was. Maybe it’s because I took the long way . I needed time to think. To process what I had just done. I mean surely I made the right decision but for some reason I kept thinking what if. What if that wasn’t the right decision? What if there was something else that could have been done ? In the back of my mind I question if I killed Vicar because I wanted I wanted that feeling that being in the military gave me. Sad to say, but I was comfortable there. When I got home Cheryl was in our bedroom. I could hear her crying as I entered the house. When I got to the bedroom I slowly opened the door. “It’s done” I said “so that’s it he’s gone for good ?” said Cheryl. “ Yes dear, but that was the best decision we could have made for him” I almost wasn’t sure if I was convincing Cheryl or myself. That night I laid in bed tossing and turning thinking about camp and how a part of me wished I was still there. When I’m there I don’t have to think I just react. Here all I do is think. The next morning ,we buried Vicar or should I say I buried Vicar Cheryl mostly cried she was so distrought. She wouldn’t even look at me. The next couple days were rough for me and Cheryl. Although she didn’t say it I could tell there was some resentment toward me. She didn’t say much. It seemed as if she was avoiding me. Soon the tension was too much for me. I started going to the bars with my buddies whenever I could. Then somehow “whenever I could” became every night. I used every reason I could to give myself a excuse to go out and drink. If I had a good day I’d get a drink, if I had a bad day I’d get a drink. Any reason I could find was a valid enough for me. At this point I was drinking to drown out the guilt I felt. One night I came home later than usual and boozed up. As I laid down Cheryl wispered to me “I have a confession . . . Vicar died six months ago. . .”

3) Writing About The Lottery [Categories: Life Choice, Course Reading, Making Connections]: Please complete the following:
Blog Post Introduction :
In this blog post I will discuss a gothic fiction story called The Lottery . This story is about a town that has a tradition known as the lottery. In this tradition everyone picks a piece of paper out of a black box and whoever gets a black dot is chosen . . . to get stoned. Literary Analysis : Theme : Tradition - tho whole story revolved around this tradition that the village had been participating in for years. Choices - In this particular story the people the village didn't have a choice, they were almost forced to participate in this tradition Motifs -the piece of paper , stones Symbols - The black box - the box represents the tradition Conflicts - the main conflict of the story was that the villagers are so stuck and un willing to turn away from a tradition where everyone come together to kill a member of their village Argumentation : In my opinion the craziest aspect of the The Lottery is the fact that these villagers are okay with just killing whoever is picked. For such a horendus event to be used as a bonding tool for the community is almost insane. Through research I found that communities in America are using harsh methods such as those used by the villagers in The Lottery to discipline . According to an article on The Telegraph, an unmarried couple were stoned to death in public in northeast Mali by "Islamists”. The stoning took place in Taghlit. Just as the villagers in The Lottery members of the public were asked to contribute. The couple was allegedly stoned for “living maritally without being married”.As a form of punishment they were stoned. In contrast the villagers in the Lottery are stoned because it is a tradition that has been passed down for years. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/18/unmarried-mali-couple-stoned-death-forviolating-islamic-law/ Narration : I have never personally ever been in a situation where I had to choose to or not to break away from a family, friend or cultural tradition. Although I can recall a time when a close friend of mine asked for my advice on breaking away from one of her family traditions. So in my friends culture they're not allowed to date outside of their culture/religion. One day my friend tells me that for three years she has been on and off again with the same guy and every time she breaks up with him for the same reason. She knows that he would never be accepted into her family. So at this particular time they were on and had been going steady for a few months. Everything was fine and yet again she found herself questioning if she should continue dating him or not. She told me that her her mom has never met him and probably never will. She would never approve of her dating outside her culture. She asked me my advice on what she should do. I simply told her to do what she thought would ultimately make her happy in ten years (long term). I would never advise anyone to go against their family because I know how detrimental that could be to your relationship with them, but I also wouldn't want anyone to make a decisions based on the wants of others. She ultimately ended the relationship with him and decided to cut all ties. If i were in her situation I'm not sure why exactly I would do but i would hope that if someone truly made me happy my family would be willing to accept them for the sake of my happiness. Writing About The Yellow Wall-Paper: Please construct a typed literary analysis of The Yellow Wall-Paper. Here is the framework we discussed in class:
Introduction
The narrator who suffers from an illness is forced to stay in a room the is covered in yellow wall paper. During her stay in this room she discovers what she believes is a woman in the wall paper. She makes is her mission to free this woman. Literary Analysis Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born on July 3, 1860, in Hartford, Connecticut. She published her best-known short story "The Yellow Wall-Paper" in 1892. Gilman was a writer and social activist during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Gilman married artist Charles Stetson in 1884. The couple had a daughter named Katherine. Sometime during her decade-long marriage to Stetson, Gilman experienced a severe depression and underwent a series of unusual treatments for it. This experience is believed to have inspired her best-known short story "The Yellow Wall-Paper" (1892). The story takes place in a house that the author and her husband have rented while their house is being renovated. The story is about a woman who is mentally ill. Her husband who is a physician has instructed her to stay in bed and get rest. Her husband seems to take a controlling role in her life. So she is forced to stay in this room that is covered in yellow wall paper. At first she wants to leave and wants nothing to do with the room and this hideous wall paper. Then after a while she begins to see a figure in the wall that she believes if a woman stuck inside the wall paper. Suddenly her mindset changes and she wants to stay in the room and makes it her goal to free the woman stuck in the wall paper before its time for her and her husband to leave. The tone of the story is very serious. A theme that I found in the story was control. The authors husband and physician tried to control her by forcing her to rest and not do anything including writing something which the author seemed to enjoy. Her husband convinces himself that this treatment is working and in all reality it is causing her to become even more ill. A symbol that I found was the yellow wall paper I felt like this wall paper in a sense represented the woman. Her ripping the wall paper down and releasing the figure that she was seeing was her way of releasing herself and gaining some sort of control of herself. Argumentation The choices the narrator had to author her life were to write in her journal and also to escape the room. The narrators husband did not allow her to write even though it was a therapeutic for her. In her writing she was given a voice somting she didn’t have because her husband nurse made most decisions and choices for her. I also believe that by locking the door and freeing the woman the believed was stuck in the wall paper she freed herself and finally forced her husband and nurse to hear her. Narration I have been in a situation where something stopped me from making an important life decision. When it came to deciding what college I would go to after high school I was convinced that Temple University or Widener would be the school for me. I actually got accepted to both and a couple of other places. I was ready to go until I realized I wouldn’t be able to afford it without taking out loans. This made me rethink my whole game plan. I started looking into cheaper options like West Chester and then Aunt had mentioned to me that she had attended Community college before attending her then school Drexel. So I looked into Delaware County Community College and realized I would able to afford it without taking out loans and save a bunch of money. Even though I was upset that I wouldn’t be attending school with my friends and finally moving out on my own I know I made the best decision for myself. Also im pretty sure my pockets would thank me in the long run. So the “something” that stopped me was money but I’m glad it did because it was one of the smarted choices I’ve ever made.
Introduction
This blog post will focus on a creative nonfiction story called What You Don’t Know by Lulu Wang. This is a story about a woman whose family decides to not tell her grandmother that she had been diagnosed with stage four cancer. The woman struggles internally with weather or not her family is right for not telling her grandmother. Literary Analysis The author of the story was Lulu Wang she was born in Beijing , but grew up in Miami. She went to school in Boston. According to Thumbelulu.com She is a recipient of the Chaz and Roger Ebert Directing Fellowship, which was awarded at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The setting of the story was America and northern china. The story was about a girl whose family decided not to tell her Nienie that she was dying of stage four lung cancer. The family plans a fake wedding reception as a way to get their last goodbyes in before nienie passes away. Throught the story the author struggles with understanding why her family made the decision that they made. The story is told in third person point of view. The tone of the story is sad. Theme of the story is fear what you don’t know. The underlying message in the is story is sometimes what is best for you doesn’t always involve doing what is right. Argumentation I do agree with Wang’s family’s decision to deceive her grandmother. Wang mentioned in the story that she was surprised to find out that her grandmother did the same thing to her grandfather. So therefore, I believe that if she made that decision for her husband then she would more than likely want the same for herself. Also her cancer was at stage four so it was no longer curable. This means that her family didn’t strip her of the opportunity to get treatment. Wang’s aunt told her about an ancient Chinese joke about two patients who go to get a physical. One of the patients is healthy, the other is ill. The patient’s results get mixed up and the healthy patient gets the ill patients results and the ill patient gets the healthy patients results. The healthy patient dies and the ill patient lives. I believe that this joke has some truth to it. Since her grandmother didn’t know she was sick she didn’t feel anything. In fact when Wang saw her grandmother at the airport she told her that if it wasn’t for her knee hurting she would be fine. Wang’s grandmother went on to live for three more years after her diagnosis. She did begin the get sick during this time but it eventually stopped. She returned to the hospital and received that same diagnosis. I also think that the joy she received from being around her family aided in her ability to live longer. Narration I have once had to make the important choice to tell someone a lie. It was junior year of highschool and my friend and I had started applying to jobs. We were very eager to work because with prom and summer and senior year approaching we needed money. We applied to so many places but weren’t having much luck. We both applied to a clothing store inside the mall hoping to get hired but still feeling unlucky. It was a Thursday afternoon I was just getting out of class when I felt my phone ringing. I answered and it was the manager of the clothing store we had applied to. She called to set me up with an interview. I was so excited because this was my first interview at one of my favorite stores. My interview was for that following Monday. When the day came I wore my interview clothes to school because I was going straight to my interview after school. At lunch I saw my friend lauren who I had been applying to jobs with I hadn’t told her about my interview because I felt bad that she didn’t get a call. So when she asked why I was dressed so nice I lied and told her I was going to a banquet after school for my sister. I couldn’t hurt her feelings I wouldn’t feel right. So just didn’t tell her. I went to my interview and it went surprisingly well for my first interview I didn’t really know what to expect. But I wasn’t expecting what happened next. As I’m walking out of the store feeling so relieved that it was finally over I spot my having a conversation with Laurens mom and instantly I wished that hadn’t lied to her. I hurried into the next store and texted my mom to meet me in there. She told me about how she saw Lauren’s mom and she told her about my interview an I’m thinking “OMG why did I lie ?”. Anyway we leave the mall and I go home and soon as I get there my phone rings and its lauren texting me asking why I lied to her and why didn’t I tell her that I had an interview .Shes asking me questions like "did you think I would be jealous of you or something ? " which was the farthest thing from my mind.So I apologize for lying and explain my dumb reason for doing so . She tells how how dumb it was for me to lie . she was mad at me for a few days but eventually got over it. That is how a lie also cost me my friendship. |
