3) Writing About The Lottery [Categories: Life Choice, Course Reading, Making Connections]: Please complete the following:
Blog Post Introduction :
In this blog post I will discuss a gothic fiction story called The Lottery . This story is about a town that has a tradition known as the lottery. In this tradition everyone picks a piece of paper out of a black box and whoever gets a black dot is chosen . . . to get stoned. Literary Analysis : Theme : Tradition - tho whole story revolved around this tradition that the village had been participating in for years. Choices - In this particular story the people the village didn't have a choice, they were almost forced to participate in this tradition Motifs -the piece of paper , stones Symbols - The black box - the box represents the tradition Conflicts - the main conflict of the story was that the villagers are so stuck and un willing to turn away from a tradition where everyone come together to kill a member of their village Argumentation : In my opinion the craziest aspect of the The Lottery is the fact that these villagers are okay with just killing whoever is picked. For such a horendus event to be used as a bonding tool for the community is almost insane. Through research I found that communities in America are using harsh methods such as those used by the villagers in The Lottery to discipline . According to an article on The Telegraph, an unmarried couple were stoned to death in public in northeast Mali by "Islamists”. The stoning took place in Taghlit. Just as the villagers in The Lottery members of the public were asked to contribute. The couple was allegedly stoned for “living maritally without being married”.As a form of punishment they were stoned. In contrast the villagers in the Lottery are stoned because it is a tradition that has been passed down for years. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/05/18/unmarried-mali-couple-stoned-death-forviolating-islamic-law/ Narration : I have never personally ever been in a situation where I had to choose to or not to break away from a family, friend or cultural tradition. Although I can recall a time when a close friend of mine asked for my advice on breaking away from one of her family traditions. So in my friends culture they're not allowed to date outside of their culture/religion. One day my friend tells me that for three years she has been on and off again with the same guy and every time she breaks up with him for the same reason. She knows that he would never be accepted into her family. So at this particular time they were on and had been going steady for a few months. Everything was fine and yet again she found herself questioning if she should continue dating him or not. She told me that her her mom has never met him and probably never will. She would never approve of her dating outside her culture. She asked me my advice on what she should do. I simply told her to do what she thought would ultimately make her happy in ten years (long term). I would never advise anyone to go against their family because I know how detrimental that could be to your relationship with them, but I also wouldn't want anyone to make a decisions based on the wants of others. She ultimately ended the relationship with him and decided to cut all ties. If i were in her situation I'm not sure why exactly I would do but i would hope that if someone truly made me happy my family would be willing to accept them for the sake of my happiness.
